San Francisco Therapist Andrew Kushnick Reaches EMDRIA Certification

Andrew Kushnick, MFT was recently awarded the designation of Certified EMDR Therapist by EMDRIA, the EMDR International Association.

EMDR is an evidence-based method for healing the effects of trauma and other adverse life experiences. It has been endorsed as effective by the American Psychiatric Association, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the World Health Organization.

EMDRIA certification represents a higher level of training and experience. To be eligible for this designation, not only must EMDR therapists have a minimum of two years in their field, but have also conducted a minimum of 50 clinical sessions in which EMDR was utilized, as well as 20 hours of consultation with an EMDRIA-approved consultant, and 12 hours of continuing education.

Andrew was trained not only in EMDR but also Attachment-Focused EMDR, which builds upon EMDR’s ability to heal trauma to include the neuroscience of early attachment relationships. “When parents fail to attend to a child’s emotional needs, or are harsh or dismissive of how the child is feeling, this shapes memory networks in the brain. The same goes for dysfunctional relationships of any type,” Andrew explained. “Attachment-Focused EMDR can help form new neural pathways, repairing and integrating existing memory networks, so that you feel less affected by these memories, and more empowered.”

To build upon this certification, Andrew will be attending further trainings on advanced techniques related to EMDR, along with ongoing consultation with experts.
