As the New Year approaches, there are many resolutions to be healthier and eat better. A German researcher, Dr. Johanna Budwig, created a dietary protocol beneficial for a number of health challenges, including cancer, heart problems, arthritis and other diseases. The Budwig Diet, based on science, is a good addition to any health regime.

Dr. Johanna Budwig demonstrated that the human body needs unsaturated fatty acids. Unfortunately, many modern foods contain saturated or hydrogenated fats. Saturated fats give foods a longer shelf life.

Foods that naturally contain essential unsaturated fatty acids are nuts and seeds. When mankind lived off the land and had access to nut trees and plants, people easily incorporated more unprocessed nuts and seeds into their diets. In western countries at least, that kind of eating natural foods off the land does not exist except for a few. Instead, many people shop for their food. Nuts and seeds are often processed to add to the shelf life. To obtain raw or unprocessed nuts, it often takes a trip to a health food store.

In her research, Johanna Budwig found out that cancer patients were lacking in hemoglogin and phosphatides. Phosphatides are important components of cell membranes. There was a greenish-yellow substance in the blood of these patients. As patients began to use her dietary suggestions, healthy hemoglobin appeared. Her protocols included cottage cheese, freshly ground flax seeds, and fresh flax seed oil (which must be kept refrigerated). The recipe, once created, was to be consumed immediately and not stored and eaten later. She created her recipes scientifically based on her research.

Here is a short YouTube video about Dr. Budwig. https://youtu.be/_jmj6cALkCk

Her recipes use ingredients found at larger supermarkets or health food stores. Cottage cheese, flaxseed oil, and flaxseeds are a part of some recipes. Berries such as raspberries can be added. However, the Budwig protocol is more than just mixing up some popular ingredients in a dish. There is a definite scientific basis of how she recommended the ingredients be used, and a specific order in which to use them, based on her research.
