A healthy lifestyle may offset genetic risk for Alzheimer's

Jul 18, 2019

LOS ANGELES — A healthy lifestyle can cut your risk of developing Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia even if you have genes that raise your risk for these mind-destroying diseases, a large study has found. People with high genetic risk and poor health habits were about three times more likely to develop dementia versus those with low genetic risk and good habits, researchers reported Sunday. Regardless of how much genetic risk someone had, a good diet, adequate exercise, limiting alcohol and not smoking made dementia less likely. "I consider that good news," said John Haaga of the U.S. National...

AP Exclusive: New election systems use vulnerable software

Jul 18, 2019

WASHINGTON — Pennsylvania's message was clear: The state was taking a big step to keep its elections from being hacked in 2020. Last April, its top election official told counties they had to update their systems. So far, nearly 60% have taken action, with $14.15 million of mostly federal funds helping counties buy brand-new electoral systems. An Associated Press analysis has found that like many counties in Pennsylvania, the vast majority of 10,000 election jurisdictions nationwide...

The deal also includes a plan for Ford to use VW's electric vehicle platform to build zero-emissions cars for the European market starting in 2023. Auto companies have...

Premera Blue Cross pays states $10 million over data breach

Jul 18, 2019

SEATTLE — Premera Blue Cross is paying $10 million to 30 states following an investigation into a major data breach. Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced the settlement Thursday, several weeks after the company said it would spend $74 million to settle a federal class-action lawsuit on behalf of affected customers. The states said the company knew about vulnerabilities in its system but failed to fix them. During the breach, which lasted from May 2014 to March 2015, hackers had access to sensitive data on 10.4 million people — the majority of them in Washington state. Under the settlement, the...
